The gifts are all unwrapped, your living room is full of wrapping paper and now you have to figure out where to put everything you’ve received. Before you toss everything into the trash and a corner somewhere, use these tips to keep everything neat and tidy.

No matter how pretty the wrapping paper is, toss it in the trash. Even if you feel you can save and repurpose it for later, if you don’t plan to do so immediately, get rid of it. To hold on to items you have no use for is a good way to invite clutter and junk into your home.

Determine which gifts you want and can use and which ones you can’t. It doesn’t matter if you’ve received some really thoughtful or expensive items. It also doesn’t matter if you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. You are the person who has to deal with any clutter and mess that comes about in your home. Make things easy on yourself by knowing when to hold on to things and when to get rid of them. Any gifts you have no use for or simply don’t need or want, consider giving or donating them to someone else or a charity.

Keep gifts you want and need in a place that is meant for them. For example, Books should be kept on a bookshelf, coffee makers on the counter and dishes in the cupboards. Try to avoid leaving things lying about, as this only takes away from the available space you have and leads to a junky and cluttered appearance.

Keeping your home neat and void of clutter is a process. You should constantly be on the lookout for ways to keep your home neat and organized, especially during the holidays, when things are particularly hectic.
